App Not Recognizing Camera

If you’re using an app that interfaces with an internal or external camera, like Visualizer or Zoom, you might face an error in which the program has trouble recognizing the desired camera.

For Visualizer, there should be a button in the upper left of the program window that looks like a rectangle with horizontal lines in it; click it and select Select Camera from the list. Then find the desired camera in the dropdown. If the desired camera is not in the list, if it is an external camera, make sure it is plugged in securely. You may want to reconnect it and restart the app and try again.

For Zoom, click on Zoom.us at the top-left of your screen and select Preferences, then Video. Select the desired camera from the dropdown. f the desired camera is not in the list, if it is an external camera, make sure it is plugged in securely. You may want to reconnect it and restart the app and try again.

In either case, if the camera in question is an internal camera (such as the integral webcam of a Macbook), the app in question may not have permission to use the camera. Go to System Preferences, then Security and Privacy. On the Privacy tab, find Camera in the list of permissions. The app in question should be listed there with a check mark indicating it has permission to access the camera; if it is unchecked, click to check it. If it is not listed at all, you may need IT Helpdesk to add it to the list and give it permission.
